Hi there, we meet again in this crappy blog of mine.
Malaysia has been in the slump of Asean football scene for so long. Since the 50's, we are one of the footballing giants of Asia along with South Korea. We won the bronze medal in Asean Games in 1962 and we qualified for 1972 and 1980 Olympics (in Munich and Moscow respectively). But in 1994, we were regarded as 'the fallen giant' because of match-fixing and it has been one of the definite moment in history where we were drifted apart from our glorious days of the 70's and 80's.
Talking about the 2009 Sea Games, our football team desperately wants to prove that they can make it big time. And they did. They have been drawn into Group A alongside eight-times champion Thailand, Vietnam, Timor Leste and Cambodia. Malaysia beat Timor Leste 11-0, lost to Vietnam 1-3, beat Cambodia 4-0, and 'magically' beat Thailand 2-1. In the semifinals, Malaysia beat Laos 3-1 to book their match with Vietnam (again) in the finals. And they proved that with the right attitude, anything can happen. We defeated Vietnam 1-0 to win the gold medal of the 2009 Sea Games.
Malaysia played defensively throughout the tournament. A 4-4-2 formation was used by K. Rajagopal, with captain Aidil Zafuan and Muslim Ahmad in the heart of defence with Nasriq and Sabre Abu as fullbacks. Safiq Rahim is the attacking midfielder with K.Gurusamy acted as the holding midfield hovering above these four defenders and flankers Baddrol Bakhtiar and S. Kunanlan gave the speed and width the team needs. The two main strikers are Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Zaquan Adha. The 'Harimau Malaya' maybe lack in techniques, height and fitness, but it was compensated by the urge to win, the urge to show everybody that they were no pushovers in Laos. That is the spirit that we want to see. Yeah, winning is important in any sports, but the most important is to fight before anything else. You'll never lose your pride if you fight with your heart out before throwing the towel into the ring.
Winning the gold medal after 20 years is really worth the wait. It's the joy that we can never explained. K. Rajagopal has succeeded in his quest to end the drought of winning the Sea Games gold medal for this nation of ours. Our U-23 team has proved that with all the criticism and faded hopes that have been shown by most Malaysians, they still prevail. And I hope this will be the beginning of our journey to the new height in recapturing the form that made Harimau Malaya feared by others years ago.
Au revoir.
